Even if you’re a design expert, blending modern design styles with classic interiors can be a bit of a challenge. Clean lines and edgy details can easily clash with ornate pieces, which is why you need to be thoughtful with your approach. The real question is – how to mix interior design styles so the result looks timeless?

We’ve had a lot of these projects at Binkley Nash, and from our experience, we’ve learned there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach! Clients want their spaces to feel warm, inviting, and eclectic, rather than being frozen in time. So, here’s how to mix interior design styles without clashing.

Choose A Dominating Style

Before you start mixing styles in decorating, you first need to choose which one will be dominant. You should decide whether your space leans more toward modern design styles or something a bit more classic.

Once you’ve found it, you need to think about how to create balance without overdoing it. For instance, if you have classic details like crown moldings and paneling, you can add modern details with light, furniture, and art. On the other hand, if your spaces have a more modern foundation, introduce classic textures for balance.

Use A Unifying Color Palette

Mixing interior design styles becomes even trickier once color palettes come into the picture. Use too many, and things can easily get chaotic.

Traditional design styles usually include warmer tones and richer colors, while modern design styles lean more towards monochromes and neutrals. The best way to connect the two is to choose colors that go in both directions. Think warm neutrals, soft creams, and deep charcoals.

Pair Clean Lines With Classic Shapes

When introducing contrast, try to be deliberate with your choices. For example, if you have an antique table, you can create an interesting focal point using minimalist decor pieces. The goal here is to create some “breathing room” for all of your furniture so it can easily stand out.

For more inspiration, try these pairings:

  • Modern seating with a traditional rug

  • Antique case goods with edgy lighting

  • Classic upholstered chairs with a minimalist table

  • Ornate mirrors in rooms with clean architectural lighting

Balance Materials and Textures

The last piece of the puzzle is textures and materials. Traditional design styles include wood, wool, linen, and brass, often evoking feelings of warmth and coziness. Modern design styles, on the other hand, use glass, metal, and metallic finishes, ultimately achieving a bold look.

While these may clash naturally, you’re free to use both, as long as you distribute them evenly.

For sleek surfaces, add warmth with woven textiles or wood details. If you have carved and heavily detailed furniture, balance the space with matte finishes. This will keep your room from feeling too cold or too heavy.

Curate Your Mixed Space

This is how modern design styles and traditional design style elements coexist without clashing – through proportion, palette, texture, and editing. The result is a space that feels grounded, current, and deeply personal.
